Drug Safety Update, Issue 6

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has published Drug Safety Update Issue 6 (PDF).

This issue includes the following drug safety advice articles:

  • Statins: interactions, and updated advice for atorvastatin
  • Methylthioninium chloride (methylene blue): CNS toxicity with serotonergic drugs
  • Desmomelt (desmopressin): call for Yellow Card reporting
  • Bivalirudin: risks associated with incorrect dose

In addition, this issue contains a hot topic review focussing on Long-acting beta agonists for asthma. There is also a reminder to prescribers about the risk of fire with paraffin-based skin treatments.

Action: Clinicians will find this publication to be a useful review of current issues in drug safety.

  2. Statins for all diabetics?

    The Lancet has published the results of a prospective meta-analysis of 14 statin trial in patients with diabetes. The BBC has also reported this story.
