August NICE Guidance
The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence has published new guidance for the month of August.
There is one new Clinical Guidelines that impacts on primary care. Familial hypercholesterolaemia (PDF) covers the diagnosis, referral recommendations, management and drug treatment of children and adults who have raised total cholesterol concentrations (typically greater than 7.5 mmol/l).
Statins are recommended as first line treatments with the treatment goal being a 50% reduction in baseline low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C). High intensity statins or combinations with ezetimibe may be used to reach this target if required.
This guideline also provides information regarding lifestyle modification including smoking cessation, diet, physical activity, weight management and alcohol consumption.
Action: Primary care clinicians should be aware of this new guideline. The guideline provides useful information regarding referral, cardiovascular risk management and drug treatment.
