Ethosuximide capsules discontinued

The antiepileptic Ethosuximide, in capsule form, is being discontinued with immediate effect. The product is available as Zarontin and Emeside. Zarontin Liquid will remain available.

There have been long running stock problems with Zarontin that have rapidly depleted stock of Emeside and it now appears that the manufacturers of both products have decided to abandon further attempts to meet market demand with a product that often fails to meet the expected quality standards.

Action: Patients who are prescribed Ethosuximide in capsule form should be identified and referred for specialist advice. The liquid preparation remains available but may not be suitable for some patients.

  1. Syrup forms of Zarontin and Emeside are also discontinued now by the manufacturers. What might be possible reason for this?

    1. @Chirag,

Probably due to reducing market use of those products while there are hopefully generic alternatives available.

  2. I'm not a doctor but a person who takes this medicine and have done for most of my life. It stinks that you are taking it of the market my body will not except other medication, they make me feel ill. I live on my own so I thank you for wrecking the rest of my life with your penny pinching ways, not only my life but others as well.

    1. @Dawn,

This article is nearly 9 years old and refers to the two brands available at that time (Zarontin and Emeside). It was the manufacturers of those products who decided that they could no longer make the product.

However, as far as I can tell there are still generic versions of ethosuximide available in the capsule form so your discontent is misplaced.
