Doxepin discontinued

Doxepin (Sinequan)® capsules are being discontinued in all strengths according to the National Electronic Library for Medicines.

Doxepin is a tricyclic antidepressant with sedative properties. It is expected that supplies will be exhausted by October 2006 although some strengths may disappear sooner.

Doxepin is not widely used but is not available generically and therefore alternative products will need to be used if treatment needs to continue. Amitryptiline, Dosulepin or Clomipramine may be suitable choices.

Action: Clinicians should be aware of this products discontinuation and may wish to identify individuals currently taking this drug. Alternative treatments will need to be investigated if treatment will continue beyond October 2006.

Update: In early 2022 several generic manufacturers are continuing to supply doxepin in the UK. It appears to be readily available in 25mg and 50mg strengths.

  1. I can't do without my Doxepin. I am 75 years old. I'm in the USA. In 1984 the Doctor put me on it after other meds did not work. I was depressed, with anxiety and could not sleep at all. 2 hrs a night if I was lucky. He put me on Propranolol HCL ER 80mg with the Doxepin 150mg. And it worked and still is. I thank God every day. The Propranolol slows down the heart too. I hope they never stop making it.

  2. I have been on Doxepin since the 1950's. It's the only medication that cured me. My Doctor tried many and really worked with me to find a drug so I could sleep. It was terrible. It took a year to find the drug cure me. It was not pretty. Then I was put on Doxepin and it was a miracle. I can't do without it. Do not take this drug off the market. It's wonderful.

  3. I had this drug years ago for urticaria and itching at night. It is superb for me. But, doctors have no idea how to use it for patients

  4. I have been taking Doxepin for 4 weeks for sleeping. It helps a little if I also take 5mg melatonin with it. I had also heard that it was discontinued, so that is confusing.

  5. My wife has been taking Doxepin for Pruritus for last 9 months.
Pruritus seems to be on the wane... but wait and see.
She doesn't take it for sleeping.

  6. I have been taking doxepin for a while now. It has not helped me with my insomnia at all. I have gained a lot of weight. I am wanting to stop taking it. I don't know what else to take for my insomnia.

    1. @Tony,

Further options will depend on many factors including where in the world you live, what you have already tried, other medication you might be taking, other medical conditions you may have and what your doctor is willing to prescribe. You next step is to speak with your doctor about coming off the dose-in, if that is your wish, and discussing what other options there might be for you.
