Norovirus Information

Seasonal cases of Norovirus infection are expected to increase this week as most people return to places of work or education. This story continues to be covered in the general media (Telegraph, Times and Daily Mail).

The Health Protection Agency provides an excellent resource covering many aspect of this illness including advice on how to control outbreaks. This includes advice on:

  • Drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration
  • Instituting good hygiene measures including hand-washing
  • Providing advice on food handling
  • Isolating infected individuals for up to 48 hours after their symptoms have ceased

Action: Clinicians should ensure that patients are advised to introduce the measures above and avoid attending GP surgeries or hospital emergency departments where possible. Worsening advice should cover how to react to dehydration.
