Lipitor tablets getting smaller

The manufacturer of atorvastatin (Lipitor®) has written to doctors informing them that smaller round tablets will replace the existing oval shaped tablets across the range of strengths for atorvastatin.

A change in the manufacturing process has allowed the tablets to be made smaller. There will also be some changes to the tablet markings and the product packaging.

Action: Clinicians should be aware of the change and patients can be reassured that the active ingredient is unchanged.

  1. Doctor recommended that I cut a 20mg in half to 10mg to save money on drug, now I have to take 20mg instead of 10mg.

  2. I moved from the US to the UK. In the US the tablets are oval / elliptical. I recently received my first UK prescription of Lipitor. They were round tablets. I was surprised and concerned that they might be medically different. I didn't want to initiate any of the potential Lipitor side effects due to some variation. I called Pfizer Europe. They were useless. They didn't know what the US shape was, they wouldn't investigate and they would only investigate further for my physician. And according to the poster Mrs Key's information that the tablet has recently formally been changed from oval to round, but there's been no communication.

  3. Yes that's why I searched google, I thought they may have been the fake tablets one hears about. I looked at the leaflet and there was no mention of changes so I cam on google to see if others had the same changes. Most worrying!

  4. The shape change of Atorvastatin from oval to round was very confusing. As a patient I was scared that I was about to take the wrong tablets. I thought something had gone wrong in the manufacturing process and I was going to be poisoned or something similar. This alteration of the shape should have been more widely published. Shame on the Manufacturers!
