Corgard discontinued

The manufacturer of nadolol (Corgard®) has confirmed that this product has been discontinued. The product has been discontinued for commercial reasons.

Nadolol, a beta blocker, is licensed for use in hypertension, angina, arrhythmias, migraine prophylaxis and adjunctive treatment of thyrotoxicosis. Supply chain stock will be limited and there is no generic alternative. Treatment should not be stopped abruptly and therefore patients who are currently being prescribed nadolol should be identified, reviewed offered an appropriate alternative.

Action: Clinicians should be aware of this product being discontinued. It would be prudent to run clinical system searches to identify any patients who are currently prescribed this product to allow a review and an alternative to be arranged.

Update: As of June 2018 it would seem that the manufacturer reversed the decision to discontinue Corgard® and the 80mg tablets remain available and in the supply chain.

  1. Hi, I was on Nadalol/Corgard for a long time until about 2014 at which time I suffered a MVA (Motorcycle) in which I received a broken neck (5x vertebrae cervical spine and 2x vertebrae lumbar spine) plus damage to my left shoulder which left my left arm paralysed for several weeks. I had prior to this in 1976 broken my neck in 3x vertebrae, damaged my right shoulder and torn muscles & tissue in my back in various places leaving me with severe chronic pain. I had surgery in 2000 and in 2000 again to my neck with bone grafts - none in 2014 as they wanted to treat me conservatively - as in do nothing. Unfortunately the Waitemata District Health Board overdosed me on Morphine - claim accepted for Medical Misadventure some time later. As a result I had severe opioid narcosis plus multiple organ failure. I was admitted to ICU on machine support for body functions. I was also diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation, plus three Traumatic Brain Injuries - likely to be more owing to the amount of Morphine I was given. Can I safely be given Nadalol/Corgard - what checks should be done prior? Initially it was prescribed for chronic classic migraines, these returned on discontinuation so I now have three or so migraines per 24 hour period and have simply had enough. What should I be doing from here treatment wise - if at all? Thanks. Kind Regards, Phil Davies

    1. @Phil Davies,

From all of the information you have provided here I can see no reason why you can't be restarted on nadolol. However, the question will be much better asked and answered by a clinician with full access to your health records. They will be able to review your full history and current medication list to decide if nadolol, or some other alternative, is suitable for you now.

        1. @Ed,

Information for nadolol 40mg and nodolol 80mg as per the NHS drugs database shows the Corgard 40mg is discontinued. The 80mg has been transferred to new manufacturers a few time and although it shows as current for Lexon UK, it does not seem to be listed in the current portfolio on checking the company website directly.

        2. From what I have found, they discontinued it for commercial reasons which I feel is ridiculous. I don't feel they have the patients best interest at hand not to mention our overall health. I don't know about all the others involved in this but it terrifies me to have to start over again with a new beta blocker that for 39 years has kept me stable. I feel at this time a class action lawsuit is a very good idea.

  2. I too have been taking corgard/nadolol for about 40 years. I currently take 40 mg once a day. I tried to ween myself off about 10 years ago. I became so weak, that I couldn't walk from the car to my house. I don't know what will happen if I can't take this drug. I feel it's unfair to simply remove a drug that so many people depend on.

    1. @Harvey Ravitch,

Corgard is / was a brand name for nadolol. You may be able to get nadolol in your locality.

  4. I have been taking Corgard and the generic form by Mylan for 40 years. Are they discontinuing this drug? Mylan is no longer producing it since they merged their company with a branch of Pfizer. I'm not sure what to do next. A beta blocker is the only thing that works! Calcium channel blockers do nothing! Are they making any form of Corgard? I take 80 mg tablets 2xs per day. Insurance only wants to pay for generics, and some of them don't work!

    1. I have taken Corgard for 45 plus years. I do not tolerate Nadolol or any generic drugs. Do they still manufacture Corgard? I was taking 80 mg tablets x2 per day. I have tried many other blood pressure medication and do not tolerate any of them.

      1. @Kathleen Warner,

It is difficult to answer your question without knowing your location and it's always best to check with your local pharmacy as they have access to the current supplier information. In the UK it seems that the Corgard brand is no longer available but generic nadolol is in supply.

  5. I have been tasking Nadolol 80mg at 2 tablets in the am and 2 tablets in the pm. Today a 3 month supply cost was $200. I have been taking this drug for at least 40 yrs but the cost is way too much. Insurance is Humana Gold.
